Iceland is a destination made for squad travel. Only a road trip can enable you and your travel buddies to not only witness, but experience the waterfalls cascading above you, the wild landscape, and the odd peculiarity which every good road trip brings. The long routes and road time is a great opportunity for powering relationships and sharing extraordinary encounters! 10 things you need to know about squad travelling in Iceland:
1. Planning for next years summer holidays? Travelling to Iceland during the summer months would make it easier and more accessible to drive around without concern for closed roads or snow.
2. Along the Ring Road road, you will find so many magnificent locations that will take your breath away. The black sand beach of Reynisfjara located on the south coast, the spectacular Skogafoss waterfall as well as the majestic Hvitserkur Basalt Stack are all great examples of the fairy tale-esque landscapes one encounters riding along Iceland’s coast.
3. Away from the main Ring Road you can find the rural Westfjords, a perfect destination for bird-watching.
4. On the occasion of visiting during late June early September, you will be pleasantly surprised with great weather and open road routes. A must during this summer period should undoubtedly be the Icelandic highlands, which should be in full green-toned bloom or slightly shading into autumn tones.
5. The first stop along the Golden Circle should definitely be the Geysir Geothermal Area, alongside Þingvellir National Park, one of Iceland’s naturally occurring natural hot springs which shouts water hundreds of meters into the air!
6. Make sure to visit one of Iceland’s small fishing villages and get in touch with the local life and community.
7. Being in Iceland and experiencing the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon resonates so much to me when i think of how global warming could affect it. As Jökulsárlón increases in size through the years, the retreating glacier visibly highlights the effects of this global phenomenon.
8. Always look for the weather forecast on a daily basis while you are there! Pack appropriate clothing according to your daily activity which could include hiking gear or even swimming suits!
9. When you and your squad want to change the gears of your trip, horses are the next best thing! There are loads of horse riding tours available across the island. Choose the one that best suits you and have the opportunity to ride the unique Tölt gait, which is breed-specific to the Icelandic horse.
10. Last but not least, driving towards the Northern Lights is notoriously icy and would require experienced drivers, but for sure the experience of this extraordinary natural phenomenon will forever be marked in your memories !
